How to troubleshoot Thunderbird SMTP server error?

 When you attempt to send or receive a large message with a big size attachment in Thunderbird, the error message may occur.

Techniques to fix the message error

1. Check SMTP Outgoing Mail settings

  • Log in to Mozilla Thunderbird.
  • Go to Tools and select Account Settings.
  • In the next window, click on Outgoing Server (SMTP)
  • Check for the setting details of mail server as provided in support.mozilla.org


2. Ensure Correct SMTP is used

It is necessary to ensure that the correct SMTP is used. Check the steps for this –

  • Go to Tools and select Account Settings
  • Click on the email address and check the username and email address
  • Make sure the user is using the correct SMTP server for the email address


3. Check and ensure the outgoing email is not blocked

The outgoing email should not be blocked by the firewall, antivirus application or Internet Service Provider.

Turn off the Antivirus as well as Firewall.

4. Delete the password of SMTP

If you are still unable to send the messages, you can delete the password for that email account by following the steps below –

  • Go to Tools > Options
  • Click on security and select passwords section
  • Delete the password assigned
